A Retired Pediatrician Writes Family

Serena Phillips grew up in Texas. Determined to become a pediatrician since the age of 8, after medical school a residency she cared for children and their families for a quarter century and began the first pediatric clinic in her city to serve patients during evening and weekends when their doctors’ offices were closed. Later she earned a Master’s degree, in Healthcare Administration and transitioned to helping populations of children achieve better health, first as medical director for a community health plan then for an insurance company.

After her second retirement, Serena began writing about families. In her personal essays and memoir, she explores factors which bind parents and children, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren together as well what drives them apart. And the 21st century sociocultural influences leading to an increase in family estrangement and alienation.

We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect.
